Satin and Georgette: What the Words Mean

Two descriptions, different jobs

Silk describes a fibre. Satin describes a weave. Seeing the word satin alone does not tell you that a garment is silk; read the full composition. In KANAN’s collection, the slip-dress options specify 100% pure silk satin at 85gsm, while the kaftans specify 100% silk georgette at 50gsm.

Look at the surface

The satin pieces have a smooth, light-catching appearance. Their highlights shift across the folds as the garment moves. Georgette has a different surface and a lighter, more airy appearance in the kaftan’s draped shape. Looking at both the close views and the whole garment makes these differences easier to compare.

What does gsm mean?

Gsm means grams per square metre: the weight of an area of fabric. It is useful information, but it is not a quality score and does not tell you everything about a finished garment. Cut, layers, colour and the way the cloth is worn also affect its appearance. A lighter fabric may call for more thought about the layer underneath.

Choose for the outfit

For a compact silhouette, begin with the mini slip dresses. For a more generous drape, compare the kaftans, including their regular and petite options. If you want separates, look at the silk options in the trouser collection.
